Exploring the wonders of the Bonneville Salt Flats
Welcome to the Bonneville Salt Flats! As you step onto this breathtaking landscape, prepare to be transported back in time. These salt pans are a natural wonder, and their history is just as fascinating.
Imagine an ancient lake that once covered this area, over thousands of years ago. The lake eventually dried up, leaving behind an otherworldly terrain of pure white salt crust that seems to stretch out for miles. Visitors can explore this surreal landscape by stayin on existing roads or areas designated for vehicles.

Despite the appearance of a hard surface, much of the area is a thin salt crust over soft mud.
It easily breaks under the weight of a vehicle. Stay off the salt surface when it is covered by water. When wet, the salt surface is soft and easily damaged by vehicles. Plus the salt water is highly corrosive and can "short-out" the electrical system of your car.
If you're into racing, the Bonneville Speedway is a must-see destination for you. Located in the western part of the flats near Wendover, the speedway is a sight to see. The thickly crusted salty soil makes the area appear like a snowy frozen lake bed with absolutely no vegetation in sight.
Despite the flat terrain, some low mountains or hills break up the monotony of the landscape.
We're especially fond of the sparse vegetation that grows on hillsides, creeping slowly into the flat areas. It gets hot here, we mean really hot, and to make things more interesting, on hot summer days, mirages appear that look astonishingly real. If you're out in the open, it almost seems like you're surrounded by a vast body of water.
Exciting, isn't it? Just make sure to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated in this scorching desert heat.
Be sure to bring your camera, as the flats provide an extraordinary backdrop for any photo.
